It’s hard to believe, but there was a time when almost nobody had a computer or any idea how to use one. Thanks to first-wave users like Cameron Prockiw, the nerdy days of the ‘80s somehow led up to at least half of you reading this on a supercomputer that fits in your pocket.
Cameron enlisted in the digital service when green-on-green CRT monitors and cassette tape storage were standard equipment. It didn’t look like much at first, but he could see where the tide was headed long before the rest of us got swept up in it.
The Digital Deep
It all started in 1980 when his Grade 4 classmate brought in a real computer for show-and-tell. Even with programs that took 20 minutes to load, and less computing power than a modern hotel room doorknob, Cameron was hooked. He got a 1.023 MHz Apple II in 1982 and never looked back (except for the details in this bio).
His top grades in Computer Class and speedy scores in Typing got him into the University of Calgary where he discovered something that would eventually become “The Internet.” While most people were still dialling pay phones, Cameron was already using the Gopher protocol to send text messages around the world. His love of all things digital got him into programming, writing code, professional web development, Pay-Per-Click digital marketing, and the unique strategies of SEO.
The Rising Tide
As a veteran of both the Cola Wars and the magnetic Battle of VHS vs. Beta, Cameron has seen the power of marketing transform from its analog fundamentals into today’s sophisticated digital tactics. His first big project came in 1996 when he built a website for Petro-Canada — one of the biggest energy producers and gas station chains in Canada. From there, he went on to found an ocean of digital operations including Vovia, Cornerstone Digital Canada, Cornerstone Digital Australia, and Clarity.ca.
He joined forces with partner Craig Bedard to build the Nerder coding agency in 2021 and sailed into SEO-dedicated waters with Battleship in 2023. Cameron’s previous client list covers a wide range of business sectors, including ATB Financial, BrokerLink, Cabela’s, Swoop, and QBE Insurance.
